In my line of work, effective communication in all forms is imperative.  I am good at my game, however in the current times good is never enough? The “wow factor” is mandatory for  recognition and growth.

Life was going on with its normal twists and turns until the day I had an unexpected e-mail in my inbox. The mail from the Head office from the company I work for ,it stated the introduction of training sessions on weekly basis. A  facilitator will be appointed among  the team , he/she had to conduct a  session for an hour. The two challenges in doing so were:  1.The session had to take place over a phone call. 2. The preparation for the same had to be done in surplus to the 12 hrs of official work that was on my  platter .Adding to misery, the week I was assigned to be the speaker also demanded my presence for a 4 day jam packed schedule in Delhi.

A midst all the chaos I  had to deliver my best , After a few brain scratching moments I had my EUREKA moment. I prepared sub topics ( in the same manner we toastmasters prepare table topics)  and put it across in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. With only 2 hours to go before my actual presentation, I gave myself 3 mins per sub topic for preparation. When the call concluded, I received compliments from everyone who participated including the trainers who were on the call to scrutinize our presentation.

In the present corporate world u are not appreciated unless you have overshot the set expectations. I just wondered, what was the reason for the drastic improvement in me? After a details introspection the only addition in the life  was being part of toastmaster movement. The Saturday evenings I spent in Inspiron  Toastmasters club was not just an escape for the daily routine but also a volcano of exposure. Though my days of being a toastmaster have just begun, in this short span of time I have evolved in various walks of life.

This is my reason to be a loyalist to the toastmaster movement, what’s your story?

As a teenager , I knew  that  I was average  at anything and everything I did. I did not possess any special talent . Never stood first in class nor won any contest at school . My Sunday ‘s would be spent in executing   3 major tasks  Eating , sleeping and watching  TV . With 2  left  feet  the only reason to attend a party would be  food. The simple philosophy of my life was simple “ Live and let live”

Few years ago my roommate gave me a  book and said open it.

To my Dear Divya,

Happy birthday , U r now 20! Welcome to the aunty’s club. I don’t know y I bought this diary 4 you but see to it that you make full use of it. Use this book only for good memories.

Lots of love

Neena was not just my roommate; she was by partner in crime, my agony aunt and a very close friend.

As a  student ,the  biggest influencers in your life are your friends. So when my Friends  thought  of attending  the biotech fest at r v college I too showed my interest in doing so.  On the day of the fest, I reached RV college  but my friends din’t.  I looked around with despair and suddenly  spotted  2 familiar faces. They were the good looking nerds of my class Sanjay and Shammodip.

Left with no choice I accompanied the boys . Half the day was spent  listening to research scientists ,  and clapping for others. By the time it was 3pm Sanjay  ran out of patience and  came up S with a brilliant idea of participating in any of the contests .

I  looked around and said I want to take  part in that competition.  Looking at my expressions  they knew they had no choice.  An hour later , Sanjay  had paint all over  his face  and The 3 of us posed for the camera.  Shammodip and I had  tried our luck with face painting and looking at the  picture that was taken that day, Sanjay decided never to come up with  ideas that would make him repent for the rest of his life. The photo and the incident was one of the first entries that went  into my  birthday gift.

Soon the college phase was over  and I  was part of a corporate world  . Here  I met different kinds of people , the creative bunch, the 9 to 6 types , the  procrastinators and  and Shruti Nambiar.

Shruti and I  has 2 things in common, our love for work and our love for each other.

On an uneventful day , a  parcel gets delivered at my office. I opened the parcel  to find   a letter and a peiry cardian pen. The letter said,

To the most craziest friend ever know to me… Divyashree Gatti,

Like you said, distance between  2 people can never determine the relation 2 friends share. We shall have the most successful long distance relationship ever existing. Hope we keep the long distant relationship strong and ever- lasting.

And yes I surely  do remember our run away plan.

With love

Nambiar .

Shruti and I never lived in a same location but this fact  did stop her from leaving  a mark in my life. This letter and the whole incident rest in my diary.

A 240 paged, spiral bounded, Chinese dragon faced diary was instrumental in teaching one of the most important lesson in my life.

Awards and recognition can give you a sense of accomplishment but it is people who make you feel special. When I glance through the pages  of my diary,   I realise  that l lead an amazing life . The experiences and the memories resting in these pages tell me you are not  definitely  Just Ordinary.

The aura of Cinema can  take  you  on a roller-coaster ride. In a span 2 to 3 hrs a whole story unfolds in front of us. You don’t need a reason to watch a movie, the  movies them self  have so much to offer  that you take time  to go a theatre close by. Some movies like Bhag milka bhag or swades are inspired from lives of extraordinary people on  the other hand some movies  inspire a person’s  wardrobe or travel destinations.

My topic for the day”  The 70 mm” is  not  a tribute to Indian  cinema nor is it about the business opportunities from the billion dollar baby.  It’s  rather about my life and how movies played a part in it.

I fell in love with the movies when I  first watched Dilwale Dulhanya le jayenge on the 70 mm screen .Though I did not understand a word, my eyes loved what they saw.

In my growing up years , I was  the  frog in the well. My well was of 3  km  Radius.  Similar to the trait of a frog I retaliated to the changes in my surroundings but we all know my friend “ Change is inevitable” . With a dawn of a new academic year Hindi was introduced at school  but  nobody in my small little world spoke the language . Whenever my teacher stepped on the dais, it sounded like she was Sonia Gandhi’s long lost cousin. The scene back home was no different, my family would dance to the peppy nos like chura ke  peeche kya hai and nimbooda nimbooda but the moment I ask the meaning of the lyrics of these songs, I would have a feeling of asking them a viva question. When my desperate attempts to learn Hindi failed  movies came for my rescue. They not only taught me a new language they even showed a way how learning could be made enjoyable and fun.

I was brought up in a protective family of 4 brothers  but it was my paternal aunt calling her shots in our  lives. One fine day while I was watching television  she came to me and asked.” Where did u and  Asha go everyday? I saw you both leaving the house  dressed like colorful butterflies”  To which I promptly answered “ Mami, Mlore  has got its first multiplex  called the ADLABS .We went to watch a movie there” . She throws her  bomberang  of words back at me , “Can’t you find people your own age .Nisha is 15yrs older than u?” Having developed the art to answering   her questions  I replied “What has age got to do with watching a movie ? If you wanted I could take you to the multiplex too” . Surprising she said yes!! That’s when I saw jane tu ya jane na. She thought it was really sweet of me to take her  to a new generation love story. .From that day onward she did not stop bombarding me with her questions however her question were pleasant.

“A Nomad” that’s what my friends called me when I worked for a start up company, Had numerous adventures  and quite a few travel mishaps  The one worth mentioning  goes like this,I had to travel from Laxmeshwar in Gadag district to Bangalore. The travel itinerary was simple Laxmeshwar to Hubli via road and Hubli to Blangalore via train. Unfortunately I could not reach the railway station on time.

Those of you have travelled to north Karnataka would agree the transport options are minimum in that part of the state. Since I had to reach Bangalore by next morning I was bond to take the  bus.  It took me a good  5 hrs To travel 150 kms and reach Davangere. For a person like me who takes 1 hr to travel 60 knms , all thanks to the buses that fly between Mangalore  and Udupi this was snail speed. To add pace to my journey  I  got  down from this particular bus, there was a  Multiaxle bus departing at  11:30 PM . Having no clue of the place I was stuck in and  with a good 4 hours  in hand  I went to watch a movie. I tortured myself watching Tees maar khan however I had a comfortable and safe journey till Bangalore.

Of late the movie industry  has taken a lot of criticism for misleading  our society. When we are not ready to take” free advices” from our acquaintances. How could we blame a medium of communications for our wrong doings? For me the movies have been a teacher, a friend in disguise, a savior, bought me closer to people. Whenever I feel low or feel the need of  a change I go and watch a movie . It does not matter if the hero does not die after he is beaten by an army of villains or how everybody on the streets s knows to  steps of the song when the music is being played. These movies are just a get away and cannot take away my right of making a decision  or my share of blame . After all its my life and I am the actor, director and writer of this movie!

Internet is a funny thing, if our parents in their teens were told the web would take the world by storm they would be wondering which spider is the reference to.
A virtual world created by humans lets us know all the real facts around us and the whole universe which would take us more than our lifetime to absorb. Something that is not living brings in a new lease of life when we get a mail, message or ping.
All the facts and fiction can be available on a device, which can be hidden within our palm yet is more powerful than the sword when we utilize it for revenge.
We become friends with people we never met, we find common interests in people living in a different time zone. We are giving a sense of belonging to a friend in a foreign land. A billion dollar industry can be built over it and a business dynasty can be destroyed using it.
Something that does not have shape, appearance or emotions connects people who are unaware of each other’s existence. Now can you say it in not funny?
There are times when the internet can be a bad place where, anyone can pretend to be a different person, but then don’t we all pretend in our day to day life to make our lives better.
Internet has always been unpredictable. It brings people from different worlds close by or creates distance between people in the same room. Hypothetical world has become a reality. Today we are so attached to this web that it is next to impossible to untangle ourselves from its clutches.
We have apps for everything, what to buy, where to buy, how to buy, what to eat where to party etc. etc. We can even make crucial decisions using the information available. The saying “Love me or Hate me but you cannot ignore me” is the apt one for this world of illusion
Having said it all, I wonder if this digital world did not exist where people like you and me would express our emotions. The good and bad will always exist for the same reason triumph and misery exist. As long as the debate on this topic continues, Stay connected…….

The Survival

Once the monkey is off the back you are free!!!!! That is exactly what happens once you finish the draft of you post   and click the  “post it “ button. You have officially complete the process of creating an blog and started  your journey  as a blogger. As I have just accomplished the same, there are numerous thoughts on what topic should I pick  to write my second post…. Travel , food, experience, hoppy , work life , clothing etc….  there is so much to write about and there is the freedom to write too. There definitely is going to be a good fight before I finish drafting my second post.

After much thought the most apt topic to write on was the thought itself. SURVIVAL . The  strive, the pain , the hardships are all forgotten once we achieve the goal or succeed .  Though we always say in our thank you speeches “ I worked very hard to succeed “, but is success the only reason we fought the battle. No we fought the battle to survive, we mastered the act of survival and that is when we pulled our shoes and aimed for success

Success is sweet, powerful  and  satisfying . Eventually it will come to all of us. Whereas  survival is a trait which separates the doers from the quitters. It is the driving force for us to hope for a better tomorrow and live the moment with respect.

In the business world , when  we decide to venture out  to try something new, we analyze the conditions, the possible outcomes, the investments, do the  market research . However on the very top of our checklist will be to  analyze the risks, we try to understand whether we will be able to survive in spite of a failure if  and when it occurs. A lot of deal of money is spent on risk management  alone.

Nobody likes to loose but everyone wants to survive. Deny it  if you want but that is a fact. When we hit the rock bottom, we do everything possible to just survive and then take drastic measure to succeed, because we know we can’t survive for a long time if the situation continues. That is by theory when you see so many success stories coming from people and places you least expected.

With the hope that  I will survive to write many more posts and  the self-assurance that inspite of the criticism or failure which is a part and parcel of life , I will be able to sustain and succeed …..

Its good to make a beginning

They say the best way to start something  new is by taking ownership  of it  and giving it your best short to  make it work. We have all have our stories of success, failure, hardships and challenges. The reason for all the everlasting  memories is because we got out of our comfort zone and tried. These very journeys have made us the person we are today.

Today I make a new beginning, as a blogger. With the hope to learn something new through the process. Through the journey I may realise how good or terrible I am but then atleast I will know that I tried. That very feeling in the future is the reason I begin this journey.

The new world  that awaits is unknown ,still it connects us to people we know or wish to know. The world which tells, you are the not the weird one out, we are all in it together .

A patform to share the wierdiest of ideas or thoughts that ponder all of us but still remain untold.  Sometimes we will agree with each other ,there will also be times of criticizism.

Cheers to all of it and  the  journey  which will be shape some wonderful memories  . Cheers to “THE NEW BEGINNING” …….
